How the FLAMES game works

FLAMES has been passed around notebooks and lunch tables for generations. The rules are simple: write both names, strike out every letter the two share one for one, and count what's left. That count is then used to eliminate letters from the word FLAMES, round after round, until a single letter survives. Whichever remains — F, L, A, M, E or S — is your relationship's label.

Our FLAMES calculator does all the crossing-out and counting for you in an instant. And like everything here, it's completely deterministic: the same two names always land on the same letter, so you can replay it with friends and get the same answer every time.

A quick word on the outcomes

Landing on "Enemies" doesn't mean you're doomed, and "Marriage" isn't a proposal — every result is a bit of fun. If you want a softer, percentage-style read instead, try the love calculator by name or the love percentage calculator.
